To boost domestic demand, the Chinese Government continued to improve the information service system for urban and rural markets in 2007. The government established monitoring platforms at ministerial, provincial, prefectural and county levels, covering 14,000 enterprises in more than 2,000 cities and towns in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. As a result, the quality and marketing channels of 600 major categories of commodities were under supervision.
To tap the rural consumption potential, the Ministry of Commerce thoroughly implemented a rural market development program. Until now, 203,000 rural stores have been built, covering three fourths of counties throughout the country and realizing sales volume of 75 billion yuan. The ministry also launched the “Double Hundred Market Projects,” according to which 100 large-scale agricultural product wholesale markets were renovated and another 100 large circulation markets were cultivated. In the first half of 2007, the sales volume of the 100 wholesale markets totaled 160 billion yuan.
The Chinese Government made all efforts to protect the legitimate rights of consumers, when encouraging consumption. Related ministries and departments jointly launched campaigns to regulate the non-staple food market, cracking down fraud activities and punishing false and misleading advertisements.
